White Elephant (also called Dirty Santa in the American South) is Secret Santa's rowdy cousin. Nobody buys for a specific person: everyone brings one wrapped gift for the pool, and the game itself is choosing, unwrapping — and stealing.

The classic rules

Everyone brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget. The gift is anonymous — don't label it.
Draw the turn order — numbers from a hat, or a random draw.
Player one picks any gift from the pool and unwraps it for everyone to see.
Every later player chooses: unwrap a new gift from the pool, or steal an already-opened one. If yours is stolen, you immediately do the same — open a new gift or steal a different one.
After a set number of steals (three is standard), a gift "freezes" and can never move again.
After the last gift is opened, player one — who never had a chance to steal — gets one final swap with any unfrozen gift. Game over.

Popular variations

Dirty Santa: the same structure, but gifts skew desirable rather than jokey — which makes the stealing genuinely competitive.
The gag rule: every gift must be funny, weird, or regifted. The "best worst gift" earns a trophy and returns next year.
Themed pools: everything under $10, only things from your own house, mugs only — any constraint makes the game better.

What makes a great White Elephant gift

The sweet spot is “I can't believe this exists, and I kind of want it.” Reliable hits: absurd kitchen gadgets, surprisingly nice things in silly packaging, nostalgic toys. And the game's best psychological trick — one genuinely good gift in deliberately ugly wrapping.
